Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you had a great holiday and were able to spend quality time with your child or children. I was lucky enough to spend time with my family doing things such as going out to lunch, movies, bowling, playing cards and spending time together at home. I was able to find time for myself and as well as relaxing. I was able to complete all those jobs I had put off over the term. I was successful in getting out my chainsaw and doing some serious pruning and finished painting a bedroom which I now just need to install flooring. I am looking forward to another great Term with the staff, parents and students of OLGC.
Staff Professional Development
The first day back this term teachers spent the day engaged investigating Numeracy Dedicated Time and Differentiation within the Mathematics curriculum. Over the next semester we will continue to develop and extend our approach to the teaching of mathematics to ensure that we are catering for all individuals as well as making the learning intentions very clear to students.
Year Four Classroom Refurbishment
Over the school holidays works were carried out in the Year 4 Classroom. The classroom was painted, carpets were replaced and new furniture was added. The classroom looks amazing and the Year 4 students have really enjoyed the new working environment. You are more than welcome to pop in for a look. These works are part of the School Board whole classroom refurbishment project which includes the refurbishment of a classroom each year.
This term is a very busy term with a variety of activities happening including the Sacrament of Reconciliation, ADHOC movie Night, OLGC Quiz night, Performing Arts, Book Week, Book Fair, Science Week, Choir- One Big Voice, Athletics Carnival, Interschool Athletics and Learning Journeys. To keep updated on events please see the school google calendar, located on the front page of our website, for most current dates and times.
Talk about how things are similar and different (e.g. this one is pointy but this one is rounded), and classify the same group of objects in different ways (colours, shapes, “pointy”, “rough”…)
With two or three objects, move them around and ask how many there are now. Keep experimenting until the child realises that moving the objects doesn’t make the number change – there are still the same amount.
Don’t always count things in a line or from left to right. Try a circle or just a mixed up group. Also, count mixed groups of objects (e.g. a block, a lego man and a ball) rather than always the same things. Mix up the colours too.
It was my absolute pleasure to attend the Year Five Camp to Mundaring and York. Mrs Nuttall did an absolutely superb job in both organising and running the Year Five Camp. Her kindness, excellent organisation and sense of fun made the camp a very positive experience. We were blessed to have Mrs King, Mr Fry and Mrs Forbes who worked tirelessly to ensure children were safe, well fed and secure. The activities and excursions were well planned and the evening activities were highly entertaining, particularly the Unusual Talent Show whereby we had singers, dancers and Sumo wrestlers; much fun was had by all.
The second day of the camp found us at the York Museum which is an interactive museum whereby the children had the opportunity to dress up in period costume, play old instruments and games. The children were engaged for hours and learned a lot about early Western Australia through this experience.
The Penny Farthing Store was a popular highlight for the children where many had a difficult time making choices due to the delectable selection available. My heart was touched when many children voluntarily donated their change to a charity; what great generosity of spirit our children have.
It is heartening to see our children be kind, use manners and be thoughtful and considerate of one another. A terrific time was had by one and all.
OLGC is proud to exhibit The Uthando Dolls at Catholic Education’s 1st Primary Angelico Art Exhibition at Forrest Centre, 221 St Georges Terrace, Perth.
The exhibition will run from 24th July - 11th August from 9am-5pm weekdays.
Once the Dolls have been returned to the school, we will be sending them off to the KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. This community is deeply affected by the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This affects the lives of all children, not just orphans, because the parental, family and cultural support around them is missing or fragmented. One way we can help them feel more secure is to support them in PLAY.
Thank you to Miss Kenworthy, Mrs. Luca and all the children who created these beautiful dolls.

Last term we ran our class competition and the winning class will be announced at the next school assembly. A number of people came back to banking during the term and some classes have 8-10 students per class banking, well done. It was a close competition between a few classes but I will not say anything else until the assembly!
