Welcome back to the 2018 School year. I hope you have all had an enjoyable and restful holiday. I took the opportunity over the holidays to get many of those jobs I have been putting off completed. I was very fortunate to spend a week with my family down in Mandurah where we swam, ate, played games and generally relaxed. A warm welcome to all our new families and to Mrs Cochrane(Year 3 & IT Leader). Also a special welcome back to Mr Fitzpatrick.
Staff Professional Learning
On Monday and Tuesday of last week staff were involved in professional learning. One of the areas we focused on was the Catholic Education of Western Australia’s (CEWA) new Child Safety Framework. The aim of the CEWA Child Safe Framework is to enable all Catholic schools to create environments where children are safe. Ultimately, the framework aspires to support CEWA leaders to create the best and safest school environments possible. The key concepts underpinning the Frame work are: Situational Prevention and Extended Guardianship. The Framework will be launched by CEWA next Month.
Over the school holidays the builders were appointed for the Kindergarten and nature play development project. As you can see by the photos below they have begun work, with most of the demolition work being completed.
Fencing around perimeter of school has nearly been completed with a few gaps under the fence to be adjusted. Fencing was also placed around electrical boxes on the oval and we are waiting the arrival of the gate to close off this area. Over the next month gates around the school will be replaced and automatic locking system will be installed. More information will be provided to parents once the system has been installed. The second part of the fencing project which includes the internal fencing around the Pre primary/Kindy play area and nature play area will begin later in the term.
At the very beginning of the school holidays I received a surprise call that the bore for reticulation located on the school oval had collapsed. It is currently fenced off and should be fixed over the next few weeks.
Parent Teacher Night
Tonight we are holding the Parent Teacher Information Night for PP - 6. This is an important information session for all parents. I strongly encourage all to attend. To allow parents to attend more than one class talks will repeated.

We have begun weekly rotating fitness activities for year 1-6 children held each Monday. Julie Goode has organized these activities which our Year 6 students will lead.
Student and visitor sign in and out
Please ensure that you are signing in or out late students or early departures at the front office using the iPad system. This is to be completed by using the ipad located in the front office. Visitors and parent helpers are also asked to sign in. Any volunteers or visitors will need to wear a stick on badge printed through the sign in system. Please ensure that volunteers or visitors sign out before leaving.
If your child arrives to school after 8.40am, you must sign them in using this system. Your child will then be given a red card to take to the class teacher, this is to let the teacher know that you have signed them in.
As parents will be aware, some children in our school are allergic to some foods. This is an extremely stressful time for parents as they do entrust the school with taking care of their most precious gifts. At OLGC we encourage parents to consider the following:
Please no sandwiches with spreads that contain nuts, eggs.
No tree nuts, like almonds, cashews, hazelnuts etc.
It would be appreciated if parents could reinforce with their children that there is no sharing of morning tea or lunches. Please feel free to explain the reason for this. We are encouraging parents to consider alternatives to these foods for the safety and wellbeing of all our students.
I am writing to inform you about the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) that your child/children will be learning throughout the year. The teachers delivering the program have received explicit training in the use of the Curriculum. The KS:CPC is a Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) responsibility under the Children’s Protection Act 1993 and the DECD Child Protection in Schools, Early Childhood Education and Care Services policy to ensure that effective abuse prevention programs are implemented and that all children and young people have access to the approved child protection curriculum. Although parent permission is not required under the Education Act 1972, we encourage parents/carers to seek further clarification if required and to provide the teacher with any relevant information about their child that could alleviate any concerns.
The KS:CPC is an evidence based, best practice curriculum developed collaboratively with child protection experts, teachers, educational leaders and other professionals.
The KS:CPC is divided into 5 documents specific to the age and year level of the student. There are an additional three documents for educators working with students:
from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
from cultural or linguistically diverse backgrounds
with disability and additional needs.
The KS:CPC is predicated on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities of increasing complexity. The two KS:CPC Themes are:
Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe
Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.
The two KS:CPC Themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the students. The four KS:CPC Focus Areas are:
Focus Area 1: The right to be safe
Focus Area 2: Relationships
Focus Area 3: Recognising and reporting abuse
Focus Area 4: Protective strategies

YCDI’s mission is to strengthen the five social and emotional skills and positive attitudes which all children need to manage their own learning, behaviour and emotional well-being including: Confidence (work, social), Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along and Resilience. Unique among educational programs, YCDI emphasises the importance of teaching children different “Ways of Thinking” that help them to develop in each of these five areas.
Organisation is revealed when young people keep track of
their assignments, schedule their time effectively, and set goals for how well they want to do in specific areas of their schoolwork and in other endeavours. Organisation also means having all your supplies ready to do school work and having all your supplies ready a system for storing previously learned material.
We offer condolences to the Braun and Teahan families - Logan Braun (Year 3) and Noah Braun (Year 4) as well as Holly Teahan (Year 3) and Jamie Teahan (Pre Primary) on the loss of both their Grandmothers during the holidays.

Our Lady Of Good Counsel School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) School Banking program to all students. An information booklet will come home this week with the eldest child and one for each kindy student.
This year the CBA have introduced a new way of providing schools participating in the School Banking program with fundraising support. The new structure will take effect as at the start of the 2018 school year and will include the following contributions.
Annual Contribution (existing schools)
An Annual Contribution is paid to the school each calendar year when their first School Banking deposit is processed. The amount paid is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

1-100 - $100
101-200 - $200
201-300 - $300
301-400 - $400
401-500 - $500
501+ - $600
Payment will occur within two business days of deposit*.
Regular Savers Contribution
A Regular Savers Contribution of $5 is paid to the school for every 10 School Banking deposits processed per student, in line with the existing School Banking Rewards Program for students. Payment will occur on a quarterly basis in January, April, July and October.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, after they have collected 10 they redeem for exciting rewards.

This year, one lucky school banker will win a family trip for up to 2 adults and 3 children to Hawaii, USA! For a chance to win students need to make 15 or more School banking deposits before the end of Term 3, 2018 to automatically receive an entry into the competition. For further details collect a flyer from the school banking team.
To participate in school banking your child needs a a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. If they do not already have one they can be opened in branch or online.
In branch - Visit any Commonwealth Bank branch - Parents will need to bring along identification for themselves and their child (eg their Driver licence and their child’s birth certificate).
Online - Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. When you have selected to participate in School Banking, a School Banking welcome pack will be mailed to your home address, including a Dollarmite deposit wallet and book. When the books arrive (6-10 working days), please write the account details onto the deposit book. Then bring that deposit book along to school banking on a Wednesday.
School Banking day is WEDNESDAY in the School Canteen from 8.15am – 8.40am

Coffee will once again be sold at each Assembly this term. Thank you for supporting this and thanks to Mandy Chapman for continuing to run this – if anyone is ever able to help her out with set up in the canteen from about 8am could you please get in contact.

Ice Creams will be back in Term 1 while the warmer weather is here. They will be on sale from the canteen for .50c and $1. First day is next Friday 16th February.
BACK TO SCHOOL BASH – FRIDAY 23RD FEBRUARY
Our very first event for the school year is coming up.
This is a free event for the school community to welcome new families and for the new school year to commence.
There will be food and soft drinks available to purchase but no bar (BYO only).
There will be a silent disco available for the kids to enjoy as well as inflatables and entertainment. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Farewell Father Joe!
We wish Father Joe a fond farewell as he leaves to go to India to continue his ministry there. Thank you for all you have given of yourself while you have been here with us. God bless you Father Joe. We will miss you!

Although not a Holy Day of Obligation we are urged to attend Mass and receive the blessed ashes on our forehead on Ash Wednesday as a sign of sorrow for our sins. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence from meat 18yrs-60yrs incl. Abstinence from eating meat for those of age 15yrs+. Fasting implies self-denial in the matter of food. It can also include other acts of self-discipline, including bearing with patience our crosses that we have not chosen but must carry. The faithful are to incorporate into their lives the main themes of Lent: Attention to prayer; Self-denial; Generosity towards others, especially to the needy; Reflection on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; Renewal of our baptismal commitment to Christ and his way.
