Over the holiday period major sewage works were carried out across the school oval. This has now been completed and the grass will be replaced shortly. Now that the sewage has been completed works on the original project have commenced. I have been advised that works should now be on target for an end of term finish. As you can see by the above photo some of the Kindy children were completing their own plumbing work, I did consider hiring them to assist with our build!
Mother's Day High Tea
On Monday morning the Year 1 class ran a special Mother's Day prayer service. This Prayer service was followed by a Mother's Day High Tea in the school hall. The P&F came in on Sunday and spent 6hrs transforming the hall for this occasion. The event was attended by over 50 Mums, Grandmothers and Aunties. They shared in delicious food, coffee, tea and had a surprise performance from the Year 1 students. A big thank you to the P&F for all the effort they put into making this such a memorable occasion for all.
Next week our Year 3 and 5 children will take part in The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). NAPLAN is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It involves reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy assessment. This year we will be administering NAPLAN online. NAPLAN Online will be held from the 15th May to the 25th May 2018. Teachers have been made aware of the test formats and will support all students throughout the assessments. We ask that parents assist by explaining to their child that NAPLAN is only one small part of their school program and that all they need to do is try their best.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS 2019-2021
Last week we sent out to all families the information and link to the Catholic Education Commission’s Strategic Direction Survey. Many parents have been involved in Catholic Education for many years either through their children or even personally themselves. This short survey seeks some feedback on some key areas in Catholic Education here in WA and I would urge you all to take the time to complete the survey and assist in this important exercise in gathering data. Code of Conduct
Each fortnight we focus on a conduct statement. This week I have included Conduct statement 11
You act reflectively and ethically.

On April 25, 1467, this picture of Our Lady and her son appeared on a church wall in a town near Rome. Many sick people have been cured because of Our Lady of Good Counsel's prayers to our Lord. A painting of Our Lady of Good Counsel helped to spare the crops in New Norcia in 1845.
On Friday 4th May our school celebrated Our Lady of Good Counsel's Feast Day. It was a wonderful day had by all.
The day commenced with the Year Two assembly which was a wonderful way to start a special day of thanksgiving.
All students from Pre-Primary to Year Six were in faction groups to participate in the activities celebrating OLGC.
The activities were creating a portrait of Our Lady, enacting the scene in New Norcia where there was a fire was put out with the portrait of Our Lady, activities on the oval where the focus is on working together and inclusion and creating Pic Collages representing OLGC community and what the community means to each student.
Thank you to the P&F for providing lunch for the children and staff on the day. Thank you to the staff for the excellent activities and to the students for their enthusiasm and high level of engagement.
Thank you to all students who have been regularly attending rehearsals this year. As announced in the newsletter earlier this year we have the opportunity to participate in a matinee for ONE BIG VOICE this year. OLGC is confirmed as performing in just the matinee this year on Friday 17th August.
The rehearsal for the matinee is scheduled for 10.00am with the concert to begin at around 12.00pm.
I am attending another PD session for OBV on Saturday 26th May which will give me any updates. As soon as I know anything I will forward the latest information regarding times and ticketing for the event.
This year I will not be providing practice CDs and lyric booklets. All backing tracks, parts, lyrics and choreography can be found on the website under the STUDENT heading using the password pelican.
Please allow your child to spend some time rehearsing the songs over the next few months as there is a lot of repertoire to cover this year.

LOVE TO HELP…. BUT DON’T REALLY WANT TO JOIN THE P&F???
We can still use you and would love some extra helpers.
We are looking to compile a list of names of people that may like to help with some of the events that the P&F run. There is no formal commitment required from anyone, just looking at creating a list of names that we can call on when we need an extra pair of hands. We know there are a lot of people that like to help when they can but can’t commit to joining the P&F. There is still plenty of ways you can help, and we would love to hear from you.
Some of the things you may be asked to assist with are:
Mothers / Father’s Day Stalls – help run the stall and with children’s purchases
Feast Day – food prep and serving lunch to students
Kids Disco – set up prior to event and or help run stalls at disco
Ice Cream days – serving out of the canteen for less than an hour on a Friday at lunch time
School functions – set up, BBQ, bar etc
It’s a great way to meet other parents within the school community and the kids always love seeing you around the school.

The kids all loved their sausage sizzle lunch last Friday and a big thank you must go to Kirk Phillips who cooked the BBQ. There was also a huge turnout of help from the mothers within the school that assisted with the food prep and then serving lunch. It all contributed to the serving of lunch for over 200 kids run very smoothly.
MOTHERS DAY HIGH TEA
A beautiful morning tea was held this week with around 50 mothers, grandmothers and aunties from the school community. Thank you for supporting this inaugural event and we look forward to growing on it in future years. Huge thank you to the many ladies who stayed behind and helped clean up and wash all those tea cups and plates – many thanks!!
MOTHERS DAY STALL
There will be goodies available for the children to purchase something for their Mum, Grandmother or Carer. Students are given the opportunity to make their selection during class time with teachers and assistants to help with purchases. Please note that we ask for a maximum of $5 to be spent per child with gifts ranging from $1-5.

Year Six Evangelisations Project- ‘Beanies for Babies.’
The Year Six class is seeking donations of 8ply acrylic wool in all colours. We have been very busy crocheting blanket squares and beanies for new born babies but have now run out of wool. If you, or any of your family members, have any wool that you would like to donate, please bring it along to the year six classroom or contact Mrs. Lilford.

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our students we have raised $180 for our school through School Banking commissions in Term 1.
Each year an Annual Contribution is paid to the school each calendar year when their first School Banking deposit is processed. The amount paid is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year which for our school is $100.
A Regular Savers Contribution of $5 is paid to the school for every 10 School Banking deposits processed per student, in line with the existing School Banking Rewards Program for students.
These funds will go towards a Coin Sorter that will be used weekly at School Banking, for P & F and school events.
Check out the new rewards for this Term! These can be ordered once you have 10 deposits.
Saving regularly is an important habit to get into, whether you're saving a little or a lot. Keep up the great work and remember to bring in your School Banking deposit each Wednesday.
